Intestinal Transplantation: The Nursing Care Perspective

A transplant nursing workshop affiliated with the Xth International Small Bowel Transplant Symposium

Who should attend?

This workshop is designed for transplant nurses, transplant coordinators, dieticians, TPN and enteral nutritionists, pharmacists, social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and other allied transplant professionals who are interested in the care of intestinal failure patients and intestinal transplant candidates and recipients.  The conference will provide state of the art information with practical management strategies and interventions for those involved in the care of children and adults with intestinal failure. Medical and nursing care strategies that enhance survival and contribute to an optimum outcome will be presented.  Complications related to infection and rejection, guidelines for managing nutrition, and psychosocial issues will be discussed.

 Following attendance at this workshop, the participant will be able to:

  • List the most common causes of short gut syndrome.
  • Describe the nutritional and medical management of the intestinal failure patient.
  • List the most common indications for intestinal transplantation.
  • List the primary components of the transplant evaluation.
  • Specify the primary criteria for listing a patient for intestine transplant.
  • Discuss post-operative nursing management in the early post-operative period.
  • Discuss outpatient nursing management of the intestinal transplant recipient.
  • Discuss the most common nutritional problems post-transplant.
  • Generally discuss prevention and treatment of rejection.
  • List the most common infectious complications post-transplant.
  • Generally describe how transplantation affects the patient’s physical functioning.
  • List 3 long-term concerns for the intestine transplant recipient.
  • Describe the most common areas of psychosocial concern for the intestine transplant recipient and family.
